New Working Group - Parallel Computing Education

Informatics Europe is happy to announce a call for participation in the working group “Parallel Computing (Supercomputing) Education in Europe: State-of-Art”.

The working group will be coordinated by Prof. Vladimir Voevodin, Moscow State University, and Prof. Victor Gergel, Nizhni Novgorod State, leaders of a remarkable educational effort with a broad impact and results that have significantly contributed to the improvement of Parallelism and Concurrency education in Russian. Their project, among other honors, was one of the winners of the 2011 Curriculum Award  granted by Informatics Europe and Intel.

Professors and educators from all Universities in Europe are welcome. Details on the working group plan and how to join can be found in the call below.

Informatics Europe New Board

The General Assembly of Informatics Europe elected the new Board that will direct the association from 2012 at the ECSS 2011 in Milan. Nine new members have been elected to the Board; they join seven members whose terms have been renewed for another two years. The new Executive Committee of the association, composed of president, two vice-presidents and a treasurer was also elected in Milan.

Winners 2011 Curriculum Best Practices Award

The winners of the 2011 Curriculum Best Practices Award for Parallelism and Concurrency were presented in a special ceremony during the ECSS 2011 in Milan, Italy.

A team from Germany, led by Georg Hager, Gerhard Wellein, and Jan Treibig, from the Erlangen Regional Computing Center and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and a team from Russia, led by Victor Gergel and Vladimir Voevodin, from Nizhni Novgorod State and Moscow State University, shared the 2011 Curriculum Best Practices Award, organized by Informatics Europe and sponsored by Intel. The Award ceremony was held in Milan, as part of the ECSS 2011 program, where the winners had the opportunity to present and discuss the achievements of their educational efforts in the area of Parallelism and Concurrency.

ECSS 2011 - Sucess in Milan!

The ECSS 2011 was successfully held last week in Milan. Three days of extremely interesting talks by top class researchers, educators and leaders in industry and governmental agencies, experiences and best practices exchange and passionate debate marked the 7th European Computer Science Summit hosted by the Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy.

The slides of the talks, gently shared by the speakers, are now available for download in the conference website.

The ECSS 2011 is the 7th Summit of DEANS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS and SENIOR FACULTY of leading European Computer Science and Informatics faculties, departments, research institutes and laboratories. Like its previous editions, ECSS 2011 is the meeting place for anyone interested in issues of research, education and policy in Informatics. The conference offers an unique opportunity to meet some of the leading decision makers in informatics research and education, and discuss the critical issues of the discipline. The summit will be held this year at the Politecnico di Milano, in the heart of one of the most exciting cities in the world, filled with culture, art and innovation.

ECSS 2011 - Final Program Online

The final program of the 7th European Computer Science Summit, to be held in Milan from 7 to 9 of November 2011, is now available online in the conference website.

Available also the final program of the Pre-Summit Workshop for Department Chairs, Deans, and Research Directors, chaired by Prof. Mehdi Jazayeri from the University of Lugano, Switzerland.

ECSS 2011- Social Program

The ECSS 2011 includes a set of very special social events. Beyond the already traditional conference dinner on Tuesday evening, that this year will take place in the authentic Ristorante Orti di Leonardo, serving the best traditional Italian food, ECSS participants will have the opportunity to visit one of the most famous cultural sites of the world: the Leonardo da Vinci's master piece: "The Last Supper (L'ultima Cena)" at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, UNESCO world Heritage site. The visit is scheduled for Tuesday just after the end of the day's program and before the conference dinner.

Workshop for Department Chairs, Deans, and Research Directors

The day before the actual Summit, November 07, a special workshop for Deans, Department Chairs and Research Directors chaired by Prof. Mehdi Jazayeri, from the University of Lugano, will be held.

The goal of the workshop is to provide a networking opportunity for department chairs, old and new, to share experiences, common challenges, and best practices. It provides a forum for strengthening your leadership and management competencies by exchanging best practices and by building relationships among department heads at European Informatics research institutions. The workshop will be a mixture of discussions/knowledge sharing in smaller groups and plenary sessions. Please bring the issues you are facing and approaches you have found to work.

We are proud to introduce our new website. After several months in a project of complete redesign and development, the new Informatics Europe website is now online.
