With seven professors and more than 100 academic staff members, paluno conducts application-oriented research in close cooperation with prominent partners from industry and research. paluno’s research areas include adaptive systems, mobile computing, cloud services, cyber-physical systems and software product lines. paluno is actively involved in key European initiatives and research projects. Among others, paluno is partner of the European Technology Platform on Software, Services and Cloud (NESSI), and founding full member of the European Big Data Value Association (BDVA). paluno offers researchers a stimulating, international environment. Our offices are located in the city of Essen, the centre of a multi-cultural metropolitan area.
In the context of national and European research projects, the Software Systems Engineering research group (SSE, Prof. Dr. Klaus Pohl) at paluno studies and develops methods and techniques for engineering software-intensive systems, such as adaptive, data-intensive, or cyber-physical systems. Engineering these highly networked systems involves mastering high complexity and thus poses exciting challenges on research. Current research projects at SSE include the following:
CrESt – Collaborative Embedded Systems (German BMBF): CrESt develops and tests solutions for the challenges that emerge from dynamically coupled systems of embedded and cyber-physical systems operating in uncertain environments.
RestAssured – Secure Data Processing in the Cloud (EU Horizon 2020): RestAssured explores the combination of self-adaptation techniques and innovative security mechanisms to provide a holistic solution for secure cloud services.
TransformingTransport – Big Data Value in Mobility and Logistics (EU Horizon 2020): TransformingTransport investigates the adoption of Big Data technologies for improving the efficiency of transportation and logistics processes.
As part of our competent and motivated team, you will work in a fascinating, national and international research environment. In the context of one of our research projects, you will develop innovative methods and techniques addressing current research questions. You will prototypically implement and evaluate your research results in close cooperation with our industrial partners. You will also publish your research results and discuss them with experts from the Software Engineering community. Furthermore, you will support new project proposals as well as our teaching activities.
The PhD Candidate/Associate Researcher positions to be filled (salary classification TV-L 13) are initially offered for two years with the option for extension. The positions are offered as full-time or part-time (at least 50% of a full-time position). Each of the two positions provides the opportunity to earn a PhD degree and thus to obtain further academic qualification.
You are highly interested in delving into current research questions in the area of software engineering, and developing innovative results addressing current challenges. You have recently completed or will soon complete your studies in Applied Computer Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Business Information Systems, Data Science, or a related area with good results within the next three months. You are creative, you enjoy working in a team, and you have remarkable analytical skills. Moreover, you like to collaborate with researchers and developers across different disciplines to develop creative solutions for complex problems.
