Innovative courses
(Vittorio Scarano, Dipartimento di Informatica ed Applicazioni, Università di Salerno (Italy))
About section 3.4.1 Reinventing the Curriculum at the Course level, it may be worth citing the experience by Carnegie-Mellon University with Alice, http://www.alice.org, that is a 3D programming environment that has been experienced as a useful teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. It has been reported as a fruitful teaching environment for pre-CS1 or programming logic course for majors and students considering a computing major, or as conceptual introduction in CS1 and to programming courses, but also for computer literacy courses that employ problem-solving techniques and algorithms. Of course, Alice is also used in several high schools as well. A significant list of resources are available at http://www.aliceprogramming.net and a recent [presentation http://www.alice.org/index.php?page=sigcse_tea_party] at 2007 SIGCSE is very instructive.
