Informatics Europe Bulletin  - June 2022

Dear Members,

In this edition of Bulletin, we share with you the final outcomes of our Erasmus+ project, and call for your attention to the opportunity to become our new IE Board of Directors. Also don’t miss the extended submission deadlines for our Best Practices in Education Award and Minerva Informatics Equality Award, as well as the new call for submission of the Professional Development Workshop for Early Career Researchers at our European Computer Sciences Summit this October!

In this issue:

Call for Candidate Nominations to the IE Board of Directors

The call for candidate Directors to fill in Informatics Europe Board is now open! Are you or do you know anyone who are willing to dedicate time and energy to work on IE issues and strategies for development on behalf of our members? Then nominate yourself or your colleagues for the election to become one of our next Board Directors!

The Board is responsible for overseeing IE’s operations and finances according to the IE Bylaws. Board Directors are also expected to be active in and lead at least one of the High-Level Activities (HLAs), which are core domains strategically important for IE’s development. Examples of HLAs include Policy Recommendations, Promoting Diversity, Societal Impact, Education or Research. Board of Directors are expected to chair the active Working Groups or promote new ones of the HLA they are responsible for. Additionally, Board of Directors should take an active role in supporting the Increasing Membership initiatives, which is an HLA itself.

All candidates for the Board must be affiliated with a regular member of IE and have shown commitment to contribute to the informatics community. Terms in the Board last two years and individuals can be re-elected, if actively contributing, for further two terms.

Nomination for the 2023-2024 term is open until July 15, 2022. Nominations received after July 15 will be considered for the following terms. Read here for full details on candidates’ requirements and nomination process. We look forward to your nominations!

Supporting Early Career Researchers in Informatics

For the second year in a row, the Professional Development Workshop for Early Career Researchers will take place at the ECSS, which will be held on 24 October in Hamburg, Germany this year.

The goal of the workshop is to support early career researchers in informatics, namely PhD students and post doctorates, in the development of their soft skills related to presentation abilities, networking, developing a research plan, and connections to industry. With the positive feedback from last year, a poster session will be held again this year, where early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their work to other ECSS attendees, network, and exchange know-how with senior leaders and decision-makers in informatics.

To join the poster section, potential participants should send a research statement and a short CV until 15 July. Accepted CV & research statements will be notified on 15 August. Visit here for full submission instructions. We look forward to all submissions!

Ethics4EU’s Final Showcase for Teaching Computer Ethics

On June 8th, the virtual event “Ethics4EU – A Showcase of our Resources for Teaching Computer Ethics” was held successfully. It is a final event of Ethics4EU, a four-year Erasmus+ transnational project to explore issues around teaching ethics in computer science, with Informatics Europe as project partner.

During the event, the project team showcased Ethics4EU’s achievements including the open educational resources platform where resources for computer ethics teaching such as presentations, assessment templates and pedagogical guidelines, are available for download. The event also featured a keynote presentation by Gonzalo Génova from Carlos III University of Madrid on the topic “The Ethics of AI”.

The presentations of this event are now available for download on the Research page of Ethics4EU website. Don’t miss other resources such as posters, book chapters, journal and conference papers as well as presentations from all previous Ethics4EU events available on the same webpage!

Supporting Best Practices in Gender Balance in Informatics

As the main proposer and grant holder of the COST Action “European Network for Gender Balance in Informatics (EUGAIN)”, we invite you to participate in a new EUGAIN survey on gender balance in informatics. The survey is calling for answers from members of STEM-related institutes or faculties that have some knowledge on gender-equality practice within the institute. Please provide your answers before 20 June 2022 via this link. Your participation is much appreciated.
Our new Gender Equality in Informatics series has been launched. Our webinars are free and open to all, but registration is required:

Presentation slides and links to the recordings from previous webinars are available here.
