(RU) Austria

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by Universities (Universitäten) [AT3]. Since 2016/17 Universities in Austria had to limit the number of students being accepted for a Bachelor’s curriculum in Informatics, and introduced a specific entrance exam. It resulted in a significant decrease in the number of first-year students admitted in 2016/17 compared to the previous years. Currently, Austrian universities still have a limitation policy and a specific entrance exam but the number of places available for students studying Informatics Bachelor's programs has been increased in 2019/20.

(UAS) Austria

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by UAS (Fachhochschulen) [AT3]. A significant increase in the number of Bachelor's students at UAS in recent years was due to the emergence of new interdisciplinary studies offered by UAS related to the study field of "Informatics".

(RU) Belgium

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by Universities (Universiteiten/ Universités) [BE3, BE4].

(UAS) Belgium

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by University Colleges (Hogescholen/Hautes Écoles) [BE4, BE5]. The numbers of students at the first year of the Bachelor's degree in Wallonia is not available since 2015/16 due to the implementation of the new decree “Paysage” which defines students’ progression though the credit accumulation and not by the years of study. For Belgium numbers are updated once each year. In connection with the next updating the numbers of the three most recent years will be subject to small changes, they are regarded as temporary and will be replaced by new numbers in the subsequent year.

(RU) Bulgaria

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by Universities (университети) and specialized higher education institutions (специализирани висши училища) [BG4].

(UAS) Bulgaria

Studies aiming at a Professional Bachelor's degree offered by colleges (колежи) [BG4]. Significant variations in the ratio of first-year students in Bachelor's programs and of Bachelor's degrees awarded at UAS as well in female percentages can be better understood considering that the number of first-year students in Bachelor's programs and of Bachelor's degrees awarded in all cases is quite small and therefore small variations in the absolute numbers reflect on a strong variation in the ratio and percentages.

(RU) Czechia

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by University type higher education institutions (Vysoká škola univerzitní) [CZ1]. Numbers of students in the first year and in all semesters refer to the number of persons registered as students at the beginning of November of each academic year.

(UAS) Czechia

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by non-University type higher education institutions (Vysoká škola neuniverzitní) [CZ1]. Numbers of students in the first year and in all semesters refer to the number of persons registered as students at the beginning of November of each academic year. (RU) Estonia

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree offered by Universities (Ülikoolid) [EE1]. The significant increase of first-year Bachelor's students at RU in 2017/18 was due to the merge of Eesti Infotehnoloogia Kolledž (UAS) with Tallinna Tehnikaülikool (RU). The former became part of the Tallinna Tehnikaülikool and new entrants who started their studies in IT College of Tallinna Tehnikaülikool are counted since 2017/18 as RU students.

(RU) France

Studies aiming at a Bachelor and professional Bachelor degree (Licence and Licence Professionnelle) offered by Universities and two years’ studies aiming at University Diplomas of Technology (Diplôme universitaire de technologie, DUT) offered by University Institutes of Technology (Instituts universitaires de technologie, IUT) [FR1]. The number of Bachelor’s students enrolled at first year and at all semesters is underestimated compared to all other countries shown in the portal due to the peculiarities of French higher education system. Not included in the statistics students enrolled in two years’ preparatory curriculum to the Grande École (classes préparatoires) held in high-schools (lycées) and students pursuing an advanced technical certificate (Brevet de technicien supérieur, BTS) at higher technical classes (Sections de technicien supérieur, STS) who could transfer directly to the third year of a University after finishing their studies. In addition, the numbers reported do not cover DUT students of other non-Informatics specializations (e.g. Engineering, Statistics, etc.) who can under special conditions be admitted to the third year of Informatics Bachelor’s programs. University Diplomas of Technology (DUT) awarded after two years of studies are not counted as Bachelor’s degrees. Statistics reported covers only public higher education institutions supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche et de l’Innovation) which are granted to deliver national diplomas (diplômes nationaux) [FR1]. The data from private higher education institutions (e.g. École Pour l'Informatique et les Techniques Avancées - EPITA, etc.) and institutions supervised by other Ministries (e.g. École Polytechnique, Institut Mines Télécom, etc.) which represent approximately 10% of all reputable Informatics higher education institutions in France is not available.

Note that the difference between RU and UAS in Ireland becomes less prominent after the creation of Technological Universities (TU) since 2019 under the reforms set out in Ireland’s National Strategy for Higher Education. TUs which are replacing the IoTs (classified in the Data Portal as UAS) have a certain focus on academic research varying across institutions. Therefore, some TUs having strong emphasis on research are more comparable with traditional RU rather than with UAS.

Studies aiming at a Bachelor's degree and degrees obtained after the completion of 5-year long-cycle programs offered by Universities (Universiteter) and specialised university institutions (Vitenskapelige høgskoler) [NO3]. Numbers are rounded to the nearest 5. Note that a significant increase in the numbers of Bachelor's students and degrees awarded at RU since 2016/17 was due to several mergers between RU (Universiteter) and UAS (Høyskoler). The former became part of different public Universities and students or degrees awarded are counted since 2016/17 as RU students [NO4]. A small error in the numbers of Bachelor’s students and Bachelor's degrees for the RU was found for 2018/19 - 2020/21.

(RU) Poland

Studies aiming at degrees obtained after the completion of 3-4 year first-cycle programs and degrees obtained after the completion of 4.5-6 year long-cycle programs [PL1]. The data for first-year, total number of students and the total number of graduates includes the number of students enrolled in both university-type (RU in our definition) and non university-type (in our definition classified as UAS) of higher education insitutions. This explains the comparatively much higher numbers of enrolled students reported for Poland. For all the other countries where both RU and UAS co-exist, numbers are reported separately.

(RU) UK

Numbers include studies aiming at “First Degree” and “Other Undergraduate” degree [UK5]. The UK has a unique higher-education system, with a variety of degrees at the undergraduate level and a complex system of options [UK6]. In addition, the numbers include full and part-time students (full time: attending an institution for periods amounting to at least 24 weeks within the year of study) [UK6]. 2019/20 saw the introduction of a new subject coding system, the Higher Education Classification of Subjects (HECoS), which replaced the previous subject coding system used in years prior to 2019/20. This change slightly affected the distribution of students across fields of study, including Informatics. Therefore time series comparisons between 2010/11-2018/19 and 2019/20-2020/21 years should be made with caution [UK7]. Numbers are rounded to the nearest 5.
