Pre-Summit Workshop for Deans & Department Heads
on 24 October 2016

Deadline for Submissions: August 15, 2016

Deadline for Early Registration: September 15, 2016

The 12th European Computer Science Summit, ECSS 2016, is the meeting place for anyone interested in issues of research, education, and policy in Information and Computer Sciences. It is a unique opportunity to meet some of the leading decision makers in Informatics research and education, and discuss the critical issues of the discipline.

ECSS 2016 will be held in Budapest, Hungary, October 24-26, 2016, hosted by the Faculty of Informatics - Eötvös Loránd University. The Summit is co-chaired by Lynda Hardman, President of Informatics Europe, and Zoltán Horváth, Dean of Faculty of Informatics, Eötvös Loránd University. The program chairs are Gregor Engels, Department of Computer Science,  University of Paderborn, Germany and László Monostori, MTA SZTAKI, Hungarian Academy of Sciences and ERCIM.

The Summit is devoted to important and timely strategic issues and trends regarding all aspects of Informatics: education, research, funding, entrepreneurship, management, career development, and policies. ECSS 2016 brings together key constituencies:

  • Heads (deans, chairs) of Informatics/Computer Science/IT departments (schools, faculties, institutes) in universities
  • Research directors and managers of research centers, institutes and laboratories, both in public institutions and in industry
  • Faculty and researchers from both academia and industry
  • Members of funding agencies and government at the European, national, regional, and local level.
  • Experts, advisors and thinkers in numerous key topics like ethics, the relation between Informatics and other sciences, the future of the discipline and its influence in the academic world and society.

The central topic of the 2016 Summit is "Informatics Driving the Digital World”.

All over the world, efforts are going on toward the digitization of all aspects of living and working in a modern society. The world becomes digital! People communicate over social digital media, economic and political decisions are based on analyzing digital data, mobility is supported by digital devices, manufacturing is based on cyber-physical systems, health systems are using globally interconnected knowledge bases. In all cases, Informatics and information technology is at the core. None of these application areas would make progress without newest insights in theory and practice of Informatics.

Thus, stakeholders in all areas expect that systems become safer, more complex, more affordable, and easier accessible. This opens a rare and remarkable opportunity for Informatics as a science and an application field to leverage its in-depth knowledge to both advance theory and influence practice and policy. Although already existing Informatics technologies have tremendous potential to drive the digital world, significant challenges need to be overcome to fully realize this potential.
ECSS 2016 will focus on these challenges for the Informatics discipline to drive the digital word. Renowned speakers from academia, economy, and politics will address this topic and present their view on the role of Informatics in driving the digital word.

Invited Speakers

ECSS 2016 will feature keynote talks by some of the most prominent academics, researchers, industry leaders and policy makers from Europe and elsewhere, who will present their latest advances and debate the future of the field. An advanced list of speakers includes:

  • Judith Bishop, Microsoft Research, USA
  • Jan Bosch, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Manfred Broy, TU Munich, Germany
  • Anthony Finkelstein, Alan Turing Institute, UK
  • Valérie Issarny, Inria, France (tbc)
  • Roland Jakab, Ericsson, Hungary
  • Willem Jonker, EIT Digital, Belgium
  • Domenico Laforenza, ERCIM, Italy
  •  László Palkovics, Minister of Higher Education Hungary
  • Alexander Wolf,  ACM, UK

A few more speakers will be announced soon.

Call for Position Papers - "Informatics Driving the Digital World"

Informatics is driving the digital transformation in all areas of our life – raising questions not only in research, but also technology and policy. ECCS 2016 is an event to discuss and determine the role of Informatics in this digital transformation process. To determine the spectrum of the opinions we call for submission of position papers for the ECCS 2016.
We invite position statements including, but not restricted to, the following topics:

  • Informatics in all areas of life: What is the role of Informatics in society, industry, economics, health care, daily life? How can we position Informatics in the future? How can we reach understanding and acceptance of the important role of Informatics at the core of all areas of our life?
  • The role of Informatics in the sciences: How to design the inter- and trans-disciplinary work with other sciences? What are the commonalities or differences of research methods? What has to be done to strengthen the central role of Informatics?
  • Research (group) and / or faculty of the future: How will computer scientists have to evolve? Factors to consider are local vs. global, mobility and connection, interdisciplinarity, problem vs. idea driven, relation to industry, funding agencies and funding models

The position papers submitted will be screened, and if accepted, be published on the Informatics Europe website as well as submitted as CEUR-WS Proceedings. From the accepted position papers 10 submissions will be invited for a poster presentation during the ECCS 2016 conference in Budapest.

Format and Submission Procedure

We invite 2-4 page submissions in the CS Proceedings and Other Multiauthor Volumes Format from Springer (see https://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0).

We request authors to provide the submission under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0) and provide a statement to reflect this into a footnote on the first page of the paper.

Venue/Travel

ECSS 2016 is hosted by Faculty of Informatics, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest, Hungary.

Hungary has always been a hub and a meeting point in the very heart of Europe. Full-fledged market economy and a unique blend of cultural, architectural, culinary and everyday lifestyles mark the whole country, particularly the beautiful capital city of Budapest. The capital is bisected by the mighty flow of the Danube with hills and valleys on the Buda side and the flat, low-lying Pest on the other.

The buildings of Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Informatics are situated next to the Danube riverside on the modern and green campus of ELTE University. Lágymányosi Campus (Danube Riverside University Campus), Pázmány Péter sétány 1A ,1117 Budapest .

Budapest is easily accessible either by plane, by rail, by coach or by car. The Liszt Ferenc International Airport is ten miles south-east of the city centre. It offers international connections primarily within Europe, but also to Africa and the Middle East.  More than fifty trains a day provide direct links between Budapest and no fewer than 25 other capital cities. There is also a popular network of inter-city trains linking Budapest with the main Hungarian cities.  International coach services terminate and depart from Népliget Coach Station, which is also the terminus for a number of domestic routes.
