New Executive Committee and Board Members Elected

Informatics Europe elected a full new Executive Committee (President, two Vice Presidents and Treasurer) and six new Board members at the 13th European Computer Science Summit held in Lisbon, 23-25 of October, 2017.

The candidates were elected at the Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the organization, held annually as part of the ECSS program.

The ECSS 2017 gathered close to 120 participants from over 30 countries, most Deans and Chairs of departments members of Informatics Europe.

The Assembly elected the following Executive Committee members:

  • President: Enrico Nardelli (Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Italy)
  • Vice-President: Susan Eisenbach (Imperial College, UK)
  • Vice-President: Mehdi Jazayeri (Università della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland)
  • Treasurer: Gregor Engels (Universität Paderborn, Germany)

The following candidates were elected as members-at-large of the Board:

  • Erika Abraham (RWTH Aachen University, Germany)
  • Luis Caires (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal)
  • Elisabetta Di Nitto (Politecnico di Milano, Italy)
  • Kim Mens (Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium)
  • Pekka Orponen (Aalto University, Finland)
  • Jaak Vilo (University of Tartu, Estonia)

Additionally, the General Assembly also re-elected four members-at-large of the current Board:

  • Hélène Kirchner (INRIA, France)
  • James Larus (EPFL, Switzerland)
  • Luke Ong (University of Oxford, UK)
  • Markus Püschel (ETH, Switzerland)

They join Michael Caspersen (IT-vest, Denmark) and Hannes Werthner (TU Vienna) who were elected last year at the 2016 AGA held in Budapest. Board members are elected for an initial term of two years, starting on January 1st, that can be extended for another two years.

The term of the current President Lynda Hardman and Executive Committee, Manuel Hermenegildo, Leszek Pacholski and Stefan Decker ends in December 2017. Board members-at-large Floriana Esposito, Jane Hillston, and Mira Mezini also end their terms in 2017. Lynda thanked all them for their engagement and support during the past 2 years: ‘They are examples of colleagues who, in spite of their own very busy schedules, volunteer to help the community to become stronger. It has been an honour to lead Informatics Europe and to participate in the organization’s growth side by side with all of them’.

The elected President, Enrico Nardelli, addressed the members attending the AGA pointing out the challenges and opportunities for Informatics Europe. ‘I will be serving the community and listening to your problems and needs, hoping to fulfil your expectations and have your active contribution. Discussions on ideas in Informatics education, research and knowledge transfer are essential to the organisation and the community, particularly in order to build up a strong voice and provide decision-making recommendations at the European level’.

The elected Executive Committee, together with the Executive Director, have the collective responsibility for the effective management of the organization. For short and long-term planning, finances, overseeing the new high-level activities implementation and development, and strategy for the organization’s sustainable future development. Board Members are responsible for different projects and activities in areas of interest for the organization and the European Informatics community and act as ambassadors in the regions or countries where they belong. Informatics Europe is very grateful for the contribution and time dedicated by the members of the Board and wish them a successful and fruitful work in the organization.
