Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for one or more positions in Statistics on assistant professor and/or associate professor levels. The expected starting date is mid 2024, with room for flexibility.

The statistics group at IMADA combines strong competences in general statistics with expertise in extreme value theory, time series, survival analysis, multivariate analysis, functional data analysis, and biostatistics. The group works closely together with the research unit Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography (EBB) at the Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU, as well as with colleagues from Denmark, France, Germany, Austria, and USA. Our new vacant positions are not limited to these research topics, and we sincerely welcome applications from candidates with other research backgrounds.

The statistics group is anchored in the section Data Science and Statistics and is responsible for teaching statistics and probability in educations such as mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics-economics, and data science. In addition, the group performs service teaching in statistics for other units across the university.

The ideal candidate
•   has a PhD in statistics/probability theory, (applied) mathematics, or a closely related field, and a strong record of research at a high international level;
•   is able to teach in a broad range of core statistics areas at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
•   has an interest in interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers across SDU and with external partners;
•   has experience in combining theory and practice of statistics.

For a hiring at the level of associate professor, applicants are expected to have demonstrated the ability to direct independent research projects and obtain external funding. An appointment as an assistant professor lasts for three years, after which a permanent position on associate professorship level is expected to be opened, for which the assistant professor can apply.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a requirement: more English than Danish is used when teaching in mathematics, and more than half of the research staff members in mathematics have international backgrounds. Successful applicants will be offered Danish courses by the university.

Applications from promising early-career talents are highly encouraged. For more information about recruitment and career advancement criteria, please see the policy for recruitment and career advancement at the Faculty of Science.

The University of Southern Denmark was founded in 1966 and now has more than 27,000 students, almost 20% of whom are from abroad. It has more than 3,800 employees, and 115 different study programmes in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, and engineering. Its main campus is located in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark. Odense provides family-friendly living conditions with the perfect combination of a historic city centre with an urban feel and yet a close proximity to beaches and recreational areas. Its location on the beautiful island of Funen is ideal with easy access by train or highway to the larger cities and airports across Denmark. As the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark’s famous fairytale author, the city is home to a vibrant and creative population that hosts numerous festivals and markets throughout the year.

Based in Odense, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers an inclusive and international working environment with state-of-the-art facilities as well as a strong tradition for collaboration across departments and faculties, and with other educational institutions, municipalities, and industries. The degrees offered by the department include BSc and MSc degrees in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics economics, computer science as well as PhD degrees, and an MSc degree in data science.
