Today it is one of the largest Departments at KIT and has an outstanding reputation in Germany and worldwide. Every year, the Department is scored high in all major university rankings. With approx. 40 research groups, the department lays the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of research activities in the field of Informatics (Computer Science). Many groups participate in major interdisciplinary research projects and specialist research fields. The Research areas extend from computing technologies and architectures to theoretical informatics and applications in engineering sciences.

Organisation

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association. With more than 9,000 employees and an annual budget of about EUR 785 million, KIT is one of the biggest research and education institutions worldwide and has the potential of reaching a top position in selected research areas on an international level. The objective is to turn KIT into an institution of top research, excellent scientific education, and a prominent location of academic life, life-long learning, comprehensive advanced training, unrestricted exchange of know-how, and sustainable innovation culture.

Education

Bachelor degree

At KIT, Informatics is offered as a consecutive Bachelor (B. Sc.) degree. The respective subjects Theoretical Informatics, Practical Informatics, Technical Informatics and Mathematics constitute the key academic aspects of this course of study. The three year program of study (six semesters) is structured into a core program and a following concentration phase (in-depth studies). Previous knowledge is not a prerequisite to be admitted into this program. The program also covers key qualifications and interdisciplinary courses. Successfully completion of the bachelor thesis means the final qualification to complete your degree.

Master degree

The program takes four semesters (two study years). KIT offers a great range of different study options. Students can compile their schedules according to their individual preferences. Part of the curriculum is a scientific master thesis with either a theoretical or a practical focus. To apply for the Master Program in Informatics, students must hold a bachelor degree in computer science/informatics or an equivalent degree. Since most of the classes are held in German, proof of basic German language skills is mandatory. An entrance examination test will be held, which assigns the applicants according to their German skills. Please visit our International Office (www.aaa.kit.edu) for further information.

Doctoral Studies/Ph.D. degree

The KIT Department of Informatics grants the academic degree of a Doctor of Natural Sciences or the academic degree of a Doctor of Engineering for independent scientific achievements.
