Informatics Europe Bulletin - January 2020

Dear Members,

We are happy to send you the latest Informatics Europe bulletin, our bi-monthly newsletter for members.

In this issue:

Informatics Europe Higher Education Data Portal

Last October, at the ECSS 2019 in Rome, the new Informatics Higher Education Data Portal was launched - a project of Informatics Europe created with the goal to provide our members, the Informatics academic community, policymakers, industry and other stakeholders a complete and reliable picture of the state of Informatics (Computer Science, Computing, IT, ICT) higher education in Europe. The portal offers user-friendly access to a wealth of fundamental data such as statistics of students enrolled and degrees awarded at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level, including gender distribution in absolute numbers and percentages, both at Research Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences. A range of qualitative data complements the statistics presented, including a list of subjects identifying Informatics programs and a list of universities and academic units (with direct links to their websites) offering Informatics higher education in each country.

Members of Informatics Europe have the additional benefit of having privileged access and download rights for the whole dataset.

Erasmus+ Project Ethics4EU

The Erasmus+ Project Ethics4EU - Ethical Computer Science Education for Europe, in which Informatics Europe is involved as partner, is currently in full swing. On November 20 and 21, 2019 the project kick-off events took place in Dublin where Informatics Europe was represented. We are proud to announce to be the next host for the transnational team meeting of the project and the multiplier event, which are scheduled to May 7 and 8, 2020.

Before the events in May, Informatics Europe will aim at examining existing practices in the teaching of Ethics in Computer Science programmes across Europe. For that purpose, our members are kindly asked to fill in the online questionnaire on behalf of their Department/School/Faculty/Institute by February 23 and to circulate the online questionnaire to colleagues from other universities to help us get a complete state of affairs on the topic. Based on the survey evaluation, a report will be prepared in which Informatics Europe will summarize the existing practices and outline possible approaches for developing a future curriculum of Ethics in Computer Science programmes.

If you are interested in the project and in its outputs and networking, and would like to know more about it, then contact our Executive Director (cristina.pereira@informatics-europe.org).
To stay tuned, you can also follow this great project on Twitter: @Ethics4EU.

National Association Meeting

As part of the continuous collaboration between Informatics Europe and the Informatics National Associations, a next meeting will take place at the Informatics Europe office in Zurich on January 30, 2020.  In a pre-meeting poll of possible topics for discussion, "OPEN" (open access, open data, and research data management) resulted as being the preferred theme. Therefore, the meeting will aim at discussing aspects of the current developments in Open Data/Open Science that are of direct relevance to Informatics as well as at sharing knowledge about initiatives and practices ongoing in the various national communities and discussing whether there are needs and/or opportunities for shared actions at the European level. Experts from INRIA and CSC will also join the meeting to provide insights on scientific information policy and the European Open Science Cloud.

More information on the upcoming meeting will be communicated in our next Bulletin March edition and published on our website soon after the event took place.

New Key Data Report

In December the seventh edition of the report series on Informatics higher education in Europe was published: “Informatics Education in Europe: Institutions, Degrees, Students, Positions, Salaries — Key Data 2013-2018”. This report complements the statistics presented in the aforementioned Informatics Europe Higher Education Data Portal with a detailed description of the different national higher education systems and much-needed data about academic titles and salaries across European countries. Based on information from 22 represented countries, it offers a wealth of fundamental data covering the period 2013-2018: institutions awarding degrees in the field, student enrolments, degrees awarded, gender information, academic titles, up to precise and much-needed data about academic salaries across European countries. The series gives unique insights into the state of higher education in Informatics in Europe today. A copy of the report will be sent to all members via mail in February. In the meantime, the report can be downloaded here.

The School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh recently launched the MSc in Cyber Security, Privacy and Trust and the MSc in Advanced Technology for Financial Computing. These programmes provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of how data, computing and AI technologies can be developed to deliver value in businesses and how security, privacy and trust challenges can be tackled. The latter programme supports students’ learning in finance, risk and decision-making in a digital context combining cross-disciplinary technology and business perspectives.

  • Royal Holloway University of London, UK

Code Groovers, the student-led software development arm of the Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway, University of London, recently had a major achievement: the launch of explosiveviolencedata.com an interactive database that tracks incidents of explosive violence worldwide. The platform, owned by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), an NGO that works to reduce the impact of armed violence, is the first public database of such incidents, allowing anybody to access, search and download data and relevant facts and figures.
