Informatics Europe is the association of Computer Science departments of universities and research laboratories, public and private, in Europe and neighbouring areas. Informatics Europe was created (originally under the name "euroTICS") as a result of the first two European Computer Science Summits (ECSS), held at ETH Zurich in October 2005 and October 2006, where heads of Computer Science departments from all over the European region joined forces for the first time to define and promote common policies and study common issues.
The 2007 European Computer Science Summit (ECSS 2007) will be held at TU Berlin on the 8th and 9th of October. The program of the summit meeting will consist of invited talks by prominent academics and professionals, plenary discussion sessions on current issues, industry panels and exhibitions, and workshops. It will provide outstanding opportunities for interaction with fellow leaders of departments, schools, and institutes in Informatics research and teaching in Europe as well as leaders from the European IT and ICT industries.
The summit is not a traditional scientific conference but it is focused on analysis, discussion, and policy in connection with research and education in Computer Science (Informatics) in Europe. Informatics Europe has five working groups looking at: evaluation criteria for CS/IT research; curriculum issues; student enrolment and image of the discipline; facts and figures about informatics in Europe; and lobbying and strategy. Contributions are sought in these areas and on all other issues relevant to Computer Science in Europe. Some examples are:
To contribute to the Informatics Europe 2007 program, submit an abstract of your proposed presentation by 29th June 2007. Proposals will be screened and selected by the Informatics program committee on the basis of relevance to (and capacity of) the program. Proposals may aim at a 15 or 25 minute presentation or demonstration, and should consist of an abstract containing
Please submit your proposed abstract as a PDF file to
ECSS 2007 is open to all heads (or deans, chairs, etc.) and deputy heads of departments, institutes, laboratories, or comparable units in Computer Science (Informatics, Information Technology etc.) from PhD granting universities or research organizations in the European region. In addition, the conference is open to authors of accepted abstracts.
If you do not fit these categories but would like to attend as an observer, please contact the organizers. Examples of observers include representatives from industry, government, university administration, and representatives from other organizations with related aims in Europe and other regions.
We look forward to seeing you at the Informatics Europe ECSS2007 Summit.

In all European countries, teaching and research in information technology are facing constant challenges, some shared with our colleagues in other regions, some more specific. The heads of CS departments are in a unique position to appreciate the issues and to look for solutions.
The purpose of the first European Computer Science Summit is:
Informatics Europe 2007 will be the 3rd of a series of Computer Science Summits after the first two summits at ETH Zurich in October 2005 and 2006, respectively. It has been set up as a regular event as part of a permanent collaboration structure. This is not a traditional scientific conference; the emphasis will be on discussion.
Attendance at the conference is limited to heads of CS departments, as defined above, in the European region; deputy heads may be acceptable if their deputy position is permanent, but no other substitution will be permitted. In addition, we will invite a number of observers from industry (research labs and entrepreneurial companies), governments (national and EU) and university administration. Attendees are welcome to suggest observers.
