Malta is a popular tourist destination known for its warm climate, breathtaking landscapes, remarkable history, colourful architecture, and friendly people. Being a small country, it allows travellers to easily navigate from different towns and islands - Malta, Gozo, and Comino and explore the entire country in one trip.
ECSS2024 was held in Sliema, a lively resort located on the northeast coast of Malta and easily accessible from the international airport and Malta's capital Valetta. Sliema is famous for its seaside promenade, rocky beaches, shopping facilities, bars, dining, and café life.
On Tuesday evening, a short sightseeing tour in Mdina was organized, allowing ECSS participants to immerse themselves into the history of the old capital of Malta, also known as a "Silent City" or "Città Notabile" (Notable City), and to admire squares, churches and fortifications until reaching a scenic viewpoint.

"20 years of Informatics Europe"
Annual Summit for Leaders and Decision-makers in Informatics and Related Disciplines
28-30 October 2024, Malta
featuring a sightseeing tour to discover the fascinating charm of Mdina
Our annual European Leaders Informatics Summit (ECSS) is returning, marking “20 years of Informatics Europe” and we want to ensure you and your colleagues will be there - help us spread the news!
With contributions from various IE working groups, ECSS 2024 celebrates 20 years of digital transformation alongside our growing Informatics Europe community. Our annual summit remains committed to addressing crucial and timely strategic issues and trends across all aspects of informatics.
Sharing their insights and experiences, reflecting on the past and future of Informatics and its societal impact in Europe, this year we are delighted to welcome our keynote speakers
Joining them for a panel discussion will be former IE Presidents Carlo Ghezzi, Lynda Hardman and Enrico Nardelli, fostering discussions and ensuring an engaging and inspiring Tuesday morning session.
Informatics leaders and policymakers should make sure to attend the Leaders Workshop, a longstanding fixture since the inaugural ECSS. This year the workshop will spotlight the challenges of managing interdisciplinarity and sustainability within research groups and departments – a common hurdle that becomes more manageable when approached collectively.
For emerging informatics researchers, we continue to offer the Early Career Researchers Workshop tailored for PhD students and post-doctorates. Get ready to submit a manuscript to be considered for presentation at the Poster Session and the newly added Doctoral Symposium! Accepted manuscripts will also be considered for publication in the post-proceedings. Benefit from mentoring and sessions with senior researchers to propel your academic career forward!
As we mark 20 years of IE, this year’s ECSS poster session will welcome poster submissions from all levels of Informatics researchers, expanding beyond PhD students in previous years, and offering enriched knowledge exchange and networking opportunities for everyone. Expand the reach of your research and gather diverse feedback with the support of IE community and beyond!
Workshops organized by different IE working groups will cover topics such as how to cultivate diversity and inclusion in Informatics, Green ICT, or best practices of academia/industry collaboration in higher education. Following up on last year’s workshop, AI and Research Evaluation will be discussed during the workshop organized with our member National Informatics Associations. The Awards ceremony and the IE Annual General Assembly will round up a truly inspiring 2024 program – discover our preliminary program and session details here. Additionally, participants can look forward to a special celebratory activity: a short sightseeing tour in Mdina preceding the Official Dinner, an ideal opportunity to gain fresh inspiration and build new connections.
This year's ECSS will be hosted at a hotel, offering attendees the chance to stay onsite and benefit from enhanced networking opportunities and a community atmosphere. We have negotiated special rates for ECSS 2024 participants (details under Accommodation), but we recommend everyone to book promptly as reservations are first-come-first-served.
Registration is open until 25 October. Once again, we invite the community to participate in ECSS 2024, especially informatics research and education leaders at all levels. Join us for another milestone as we continue to foster exchange and work on strategic initiatives in informatics and related disciplines, bridging academia, industry and society at large!

Every year Informatics Europe organises a special Workshop for Leaders of Informatics Research and Education, where academic and research leaders of Informatics universities, departments, and research labs address specific challenges they encounter in their role. This year, the workshop was held as part of the ECSS 2024 program on Monday, 28 October, open to all participants and co-chaired by Elisabetta Di Nitto from Politecnico di Milano and Kim Mens from Université catholique de Louvain. The workshop's theme was "Dealing with Interdisciplinarity and Sustainability in Research Groups and Departments", through selected talks by IE members having a clear vision or experience in these areas, and open discussions with the audience.
Read the workshop highlights here.
11:00-11:15 Opening and introduction [Slides]
11:15-12:30 Session 1 – Multidisciplinarity in research
Moderated by Kim Mens (UC Louvain)
Informatics has become one of the core elements in different application areas. How do we organize and manage multidisciplinary research groups? What are the main problems to be faced? How can we find a compromise between multidisciplinarity and the expectations for researchers to acquire an in-depth knowledge and experience in Informatics?
12:30-14:00 Lunch break
14:00-15:00 Session 2 – Multidisciplinarity in education
Moderated by Elisabetta Di Nitto (Politecnico di Milano)
Multidisciplinary study courses are being pushed in many countries by decision-makers but are certainly difficult to implement. Can students with different backgrounds attend the same classes? How should they be guided through a multidisciplinary study program? Are there established and replicable best practices? How do students participating in multidisciplinary programs perform?
15:00-16:00 Session 3 – Sustainability in research and education
Moderated by Kim Mens (UC Louvain)
Sustainability is, by definition, a multidisciplinary area which is itself organized in important and disjoint focuses: environmental, economical, social, technical. What is the status of research and education in achieving sustainable software? What are the disciplines needed to do a good job in this context?
16:00-16:30 Coffee break
16:30-17:30 Community corner
Moderated by Elisabetta Di Nitto (Politecnico di Milano)
The purpose of this session is to discuss multidisciplinarity and long-term sustainability by and within Informatics Europe. We aim at an open discussion on the role Informatics Europe can play in this area to better serve the community in the next decades.
17:30-18:00 Closing and future topics
A parallel Early Career Researchers Workshop, including a Doctoral Symposium and Poster Session, was held for early career researchers in informatics and related disciplines. We encouraged established leaders to bring along early career researchers (PhD and/or Postdoc) to ECSS to participate in this Workshop, helping to nurture future leaders in Informatics.

Supported by IE's Education Research Working Group, the Informatics Education Workshop was held on Wednesday, October 30, as part of the ECSS 2024 program with the theme "Academia/Industry Collaboration in Higher Education". It was open to all participants and was chaired by Michael Kölling, King's College London and Jan Vahrenhold, University of Münster.
Most universities have collaborations with industry to support their education. The form of these collaborations varies widely, and typically includes the involvement of industry partners in student projects, guest lectures, industry membership on advisory boards, and others. How these relationships are managed also varies, from single-teacher, ad-hoc arrangements to dedicated department policies and formalised contracts.
This workshop started a project which aims to produce a report on best practices of HE/Industry collaboration in education. The report will illustrate examples of current practice across different European countries, identify and summarise best practices, and include a section with concrete recommendations and advice for institutions that wish to improve their practice.
The purpose is to both report on the state of practice, and to improve current practice across multiple countries by providing Europe-wide recommendations.
Participants in this workshop worked on framing the project, defining goals and limits, identifying research avenues and developing a detailed project plan.
The work to develop the report itself will take place over a while after the workshop; it is hoped that workshop participants will continue to be engaged and participate in authoring the report.
