The ECSS 2013 will be held at the CWI located at Science Park Amsterdam, 123, in the east of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Public transport:
If you are travelling by plane, the most convenient way of connecting between the Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam city center is by train. Four direct trains per hour are offered, for details and timetable see:
The nearest train station is Amsterdam Science Park, a 6-minute walk from CWI. The 2nd closest train station is Amstel Station. From there bus 40/240 goes to Science Park, but you can also take a taxi or rent a bicycle at the station.
Two direct trains per hour run between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Science Park.
To find your best connection, check the Dutch Rail (NS) train planner:

ECSS 2013 is the 9th Summit of deans, department chairs and senior faculty of leading European Computer Science and Informatics faculties, departments, research institutes and laboratories.
Like its previous editions, ECSS 2013 is the meeting place for anyone interested in issues of research, education, and policy in Informatics. It is a unique opportunity to meet some of the leading decision makers in informatics research and education, and discuss the critical issues of the discipline. The Summit is devoted to important and timely strategic issues and trends regarding all aspects of informatics: education, research, funding, entrepreneurship, management, career development, and policies.
This year's speakers have been selected in connection to the ECSS 2013 theme "Informatics and Innovation". We are proud to announce that the following thought leaders in research and education in informatics and innovation have agreed to deliver a keynote presentation:
Traditionally, ECSS conferences are organized by Informatics Europe in collaboration with a host institution, active member of the association. The ECSS 2013 is hosted by the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands, and will be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, October 7-9, 2013.
The ECSS 2013 is co-chaired by Carlo Ghezzi, President of Informatics Europe, and Lynda Hardman, Research Cluster Leader at CWI and Board member of Informatics Europe. The program chair is Arie van Deursen, professor at Delft University of Technology.
Summit Theme
The special theme is this year's summit is Informatics and Innovation. As stated by Peter Denning, "an idea that changes no one's behavior is only an invention, not an innovation." Thus, ECSS 2013 will be devoted research and education in informatics that is aimed at societal impact. ECSS 2013 aims to enable educators, researchers, managers, and other experts in the field to assess and discuss organizational matters that are needed to stimulate innovation in computer science education and research. Therefore, specific attention will be devoted to such topics as entrepreneurship, impact via open source, publishing via open access, impact via patents, and online learning and massively online open courses (MOOCs).
Our Program
As for the previous Summits, the program consists of special invited talks, workshops, panels and other interactive sessions devoted to common issues, problems and proposals in the area of Informatics (Computer Science/Computing/ICT). Special features of the 2013 Summit are as follows:
Pre-Summit Workshops
On October 7, two special workshops will be organized as part of the ECSS 2013 events:
Pre-summit Workshop for Deans, Department Chairs and Research Directors
Chair: Mehdi Jazayeri, founding dean of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Lugano
This already traditional workshop provides a forum for best practices exchanges and is a unique opportunity to build relationships among department heads at European Informatics research institutions, strengthening their leadership and management competencies. See more details here.
Pre-Summit Workshop on Innovation Management & Technology Entrepreneurship for Faculty
Chairs: Mark Harris, Innovaventures, Jeroen Klijs, TU München
This workshop covers in a distilled fashion the theory of innovation management and technology entrepreneurship as well as gives practical advice and examples to build an efficient European technology transfer system. See more details here.
Audience
The ECSS audience includes anyone with a stake in the future of Information and Communication Science and Technology in Europe. Traditionally, many department heads, directors of both industrial and academic labs, and other decision makers make up a substantial share of ECSS participants.
What is the purpose of the European Computer Science Summit?
More information and details about the conference will be incrementally added to this website, keep following us in the coming months for up-to-date information.
