New Europe-Wide Report Highlights Shared Priorities on Informatics Education in Schools
A new report titled A European Survey on Requirements for the Informatics School Curriculum and Informatics School Teachers’ Education identified shared priorities and patterns in school-level Informatics education in Europe.
Conducted by the Informatics for All (I4All) coalition, co-founded and actively supported by IE, the survey reveals broad agreement among participating countries on key aspects such as weekly instructional time, curriculum content, and the need for robust teacher education in both subject matter and pedagogy. These findings align closely with the recommendations outlined in the Informatics Reference Framework for Schools (IRFS), published by I4All in February 2022.
The IRFS offers high-level guidance for structuring Informatics curricula across Europe’s school systems. The new survey reaffirms its relevance, referencing 11 core topic areas—including data, algorithms, and programming—and 10 contemporary themes such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. These are intended to support curriculum development in the context of rapid technological evolution.
A key outcome of the study is the strong consensus on recognising Informatics as an autonomous school subject, and the call for substantial teacher qualification, ranging from 15 to 120 ECTS credits, depending on the education level taught.
This report provides a valuable foundation for continued policy development at both national and EU levels and is well aligned with recent EU Council recommendations on Informatics education. In support of this direction, IE Board Director Enrico Nardelli and members of IE’s Education Research Working Group—Michael E. Caspersen, Violetta Lonati, and Keith Quille—are contributing to the European Commission’s Expert Group for the development of guidelines on high-quality informatics. This group meets regularly to develop practical guidelines that will help European countries successfully advance Informatics education in schools.
These collective efforts reflect Informatics Europe’s strong and sustained commitment to high-quality, future-oriented Informatics education—equipping students and educators across Europe to navigate and shape the digital age.
