Policy Recommendations

Empowering Members and Shaping the Future of the Discipline

Informatics Europe is involved in shaping public policy on Informatics research and education by producing policy documents such as statements, positions, reports, recommendations, or feedback to public consultations on issues that relate to any of the goals of the organisation. Recommendations may refer to specific stakeholders or may have a broader audience. In particular, the policy recommendations activity aims at empowering members in developing their own strategies (e.g.: a policy recommendation on Research Evaluation can help member departments in their discussions with other departments, with their university management, and with their governments). You can explore our existing outcomes at the bottom of this page.

Permanent Working Group

In order to go beyond personal biases and opinions, in 2022 Informatics Europe set up a permanent working group with volunteering representatives of national associations (which are members of Informatics Europe) to establish a consensus on how to answer such public consultations. The working group is composed of:

  • The Director of IE high-level activity on policy recommendations, playing the role of the working group coordinator;
  • A representative of each national association that is currently a member of Informatics Europe. This representative is nominated by his/her national association. Visit the WG members at the bottom of this page for details. Visit the WG members at the bottom of this page for details.

Topics of interest are both proposed by Informatics Europe executive committee or by one of its member associations, and then approved by Informatics Europe’s board. Our goal is to focus on a few relevant statements every period (1-2 per year).

Work on producing policy documents is typically carried out online in a white box mode (using e.g. GoogleDoc), i.e. each member of the working group is welcome to contribute until a consensus is reached. When a unified position cannot be reached, we could aim at a ‘state-of-the-art’ summary of positions.

Depending on the nature of the policy recommendation, the outcome could be a single document co-signed by all the active stakeholders, or a resource on which members of the working group can tap to answer, e.g. a poll. In any case, its result will be published on the Informatics Europe website after one or more rounds of feedback from our members.
