Positive EC’s Response—Making Further Advancement Together
We are pleased to share that our recent Open Letter, “The Critical Omission of Software Technology in the EIC Work Programme 2025,” has received a positive response from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD).
In its reply, DG RTD acknowledges the critical role of software research as a key enabler of innovation across all sectors, appreciates the insight and commitment reflected in our letter and the ongoing dialogues with Informatics Europe and fellow stakeholders.
While the 2025 EIC Work Programme is already adopted, DG RTD highlighted that most funding is allocated to ‘open’ calls — technology-agnostic and non-challenge-driven— allowing a broad range of innovative ideas, including software-related initiatives, to compete without predefined constraints. The Commission encourages our community to actively apply to these calls.
Thank you to all who supported the letter. Let’s keep momentum and ensure our community’s voice continues to shape Europe’s innovation priorities. We invite members to actively contribute to this effort by joining our Working Groups, where we continue to raise the visibility of critical issues for informatics research and education.
