Job Description

We are looking for strengtening our gender diversity with a female candidate for a Postdoc position in a new project, GAT4ML, fully funded by NWO, with colleague Justus Bogner and me as co-PIs.

Project summary: I include HERE the project summary. In short, GAT4ML (Green Architectural Tactics for ML-Enabled Systems) includes one PhD position (already filled) and one 3-year postdoc position. While Green AI research, i.e., how to make AI-based systems more environmentally sustainable, has made great progress in recent years, it is still difficult for practitioners to put research results into practice, especially for more recent system types like LLM-based systems, RAG-based systems, or LLM agents. We address this via the concept of architectural tactics, which are reusable design decisions that improve a specific quality concern. In the project, we will a) curate an extensive catalogue of tactics that respect recent advances in Green AI and newer forms of ML-enabled systems, b) improve the representation of the tactic collection to make it easy to browse and select tactics according to specific requirements, and c) gather additional empirical evidence for the tactics regarding their quality impact, prerequisites for their acceptance in industry, and effective actionable guidance for their integration in real-world scenarios.

Postdoc research responsibilities: The GAT4ML project will start on April 1, 2026, for a duration of 4 years. The postdoc position is for 3 years and must start not later than 31 March 2027 (the sooner the better). The postdoc researcher will be involved in the supervision of the PhD student, hence being coached to grow in her academic career. For her own research, she will lead and spend more effort on two work packages, i.e., on the synthesis of tactics and on industry evaluations. The latter will engage industry participants in case studies and will result in guidelines for how best to apply the tactics in industry environments, including process-related guidance, but also potential pitfalls or challenges to watch out for, together with potential solutions.
